Yemen is situated in the southwest corner of the Arabian Peninsula. It is bordered by Saudi Arabia from the north and Oman from the east. It shares maritime borders with Eritrea, Djibouti and Somalia. Aden in the south dominates Bab Al-Mandab, an important strategic strait which joins the Arabian Sea, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The Republic of Yemen was formed in May 1990 as a result of the unification of the Yemen Arab Republic in the north and the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen in the south.
